The Steel School of Irish Dance was founded in 1981 by Carol Del Bianco in Vancouver, British Columbia, and has since expanded to hold classes all over the Lower Mainland. Its goal is to promote Irish heritage through continuing to teach Irish dance to the future generations. From a small group of less than 20 dancers, the school has continued to grow each year!
Dancers at the Steel School range in age from 4 to adult and classes range in level from beginner through championship. Since the school opened, dancers have competed and been successful at the Regional, National and International level.
The Steel School of Irish Dance is a competitive school. Although competitions are not necessary, students at the school are encouraged to compete in both local and out of town feissanna (competitions) as much as possible. There are however students in the school who do not wish to compete, and we offer recreational classes for those less interested in competition as well!
Dancing in the community is also very important at the Steel School of Irish Dance. When we're not competing you can often find us dancing at various venues throughout the year. Dancers from the school perform at weddings, birthdays, community festivals, trade fairs and nursing homes just to name a few!
With all the preparation, performances, competitions and travel, both the dancers and their families develop life long friendships. As much as learning Irish dance is our focus, friendship and team spirit is also stressed along the way. Students are very supportive and respectful of one another both in the classroom and at competitions.
